Your Bio

There are many scenes that evoke emotion because they are beautiful, exciting, peaceful or reach the viewer at some level. Each viewer will see something different and respond in their own way. Photography is a way to capture these scenes, preserve them and share them with other people. These photos give insight to the photographer’s interests as it shows what he is willing to spend time and work to capture.

Snowy Plover Newborn Chicks : The photos in this gallery are of Snowy Plover chicks from about 30 minutes to 26 hours old. Approximate age of the chicks is indicated by time on the white slides. Note the size of the chicks by the scale in the third image. The Snowy Plover is an endangered shore bird that’s about the size of a sparrow. While there are only a few nesting pairs on Sanibel Island, this island has the only significant breeding Snowy Plover population in southwest Florida. The nest, a depression in the sand, typically holds three eggs. Their excellent camouflage has put them in danger from people who don’t see them on the beach and may step on the nest. Hopefully the efforts of local conservation organizations will help the Snowy Plover population grow.

Antelope Slot Canyon : The Antelope Slot Canyon was created by water cutting through sandstone rocks. There are three sections to the Antelope Canyon, the Upper Canyon, Lower Canyon and a third section going down into Lake Powell. The Canyon is narrow from about 3 feet to 15 feet and around 120 feet deep. The opening at the top of the canyon is often narrower than at the floor. In general the light level in the canyon is rather low. Photos in this gallery are from the Upper Antelope Canyon.

DVD slide show is now available.

Astro Photography back in FILM Days : The photos in this gallery were done with film in the “last century”! Those of you who are using digital cameras, image stacking, auto guiders, and “go to” telescopes don’t have a good feel for the challenges in astro photography in the old days. There is no question that today’s equipment can produce much higher quality images with less effort than before, and that’s a good thing. To put this in perspective, when the 200 inch telescope went into operation in the early ‘50s the limiting magnitude star it could photograph with available film was about 21st magnitude. That magnitude star can now be photographed with a 10 inch scope using today’s digital cameras. That is just amazing to me when you realize that the 200 inch scope gathers 400 times more light than a 10 inch scope! Please enjoy these images from the old days.
