This gallery shows images of the preparation and observation of the transit of Venus on June 5, 2012. This is only the seventh time in history that man could see this event!

This composite image shows the apparent angular size of the Moon and Venus 12 days before Venus passed in front of the Sun. In this image the Moon is just slightly smaller than the angular size of the Sun. The image of Venus added in the middle of the Moon is at the same magnification so you can see the relative angular size of the two celestial objects. The enlarged insert in the upper left shows the atmospheric refraction effects on Venus (about 15 degrees above the horizon) that produce a red rim at the bottom and a blue-green rim at the top. This effect is more pronounced the closer the object gets to the horizon.
This video was taken with a 2200mm focal length lens on a stationary mounting (no clock drive to compensate for Earth’s rotation). The motion of the objects to the lower right of the frame is caused by the rotation of the Earth. The first part of the video shows the atmospheric induced scintillation on the Moon’s image. The last part of the video shows an image of Venus at scale five times large than the video of the Moon. This demonstrates the difficulty of getting high resolution images at low angles when the path through the atmosphere is very long. The sound in the background is coming from “amorous” frogs by a nearby lake.
The main instrument in this setup is a 155mm Astro Physics with 1100mm focal length increased to 2200mm with a 2X tele-extender. A crude drive mechanism was used to generally follow the motion of the sun as it was setting.
This image shows how Mother Nature was playing with me by sweeping all most all of the clouds in the sky to a position just in front of the sun.

This time lapse video Venus covers the time from 6:14 to 6:27. Those 13 minutes are compressed to 13 seconds. The exposure changes are due to passing clouds.
