BIRDS Galleries

Snowy Plover Newborn Chicks : The photos in this gallery are of Snowy Plover chicks from about 30 minutes to 26 hours old. Approximate age of the chicks is indicated by time on the white slides. Note the size of the chicks by the scale in the third image. The Snowy Plover is an endangered shore bird that’s about the size of a sparrow. While there are only a few nesting pairs on Sanibel Island, this island has the only significant breeding Snowy Plover population in southwest Florida. The nest, a depression in the sand, typically holds three eggs. Their excellent camouflage has put them in danger from people who don’t see them on the beach and may step on the nest. Hopefully the efforts of local conservation organizations will help the Snowy Plover population grow.

While there are only a few nesting pairs on Sanibel Island, this island has the only significant breeding Snowy Plover population in southwest Florida. The nest, a depression in the sand, typically holds three eggs. You can understand why it takes most of a day to lay one egg when you compare the size of the egg to the bird. Their excellent camouflage has put them in danger from people who don’t see them on the beach and may step on the nest. Hopefully the efforts of local conservation organizations will help the Snowy Plover population grow.

Mercer Wetlands White Morph of Great Blue Heron : The White Morph of a GBH has shown up at the Mercer Wetlands. At times identification of this bird can be difficult and often confused with a Great Egret. Both birds are white and about the same size. However, the BGH-White Morph has yellow legs (sometimes dark), and a light brown strip of feathers on the front of the neck (Egret doesn’t). The Great Egret has long thin (spectacular at times) feathers on its back which the GBH-White Morph doesn’t have. The first three images are reference images for comparison to the latter images of the GBH-White Morph at the Mercer Wetlands.
