The Snowy Plovers of Sanibel Island

The Snowy Plover is an endangered shore bird that’s about the size of a sparrow. While there are only a few nesting pairs on Sanibel Island, this island has the only significant breeding Snowy Plover population in southwest Florida. The nest, a depression in the sand, typically holds three eggs. You can understand why it takes most of a day to lay one egg when you compare the size of the egg to the bird. Their excellent camouflage has put them in danger from people who don’t see them on the beach and may step on the nest. Hopefully the efforts of local conservation organizations will help the Snowy Plover population grow.

  • 08-VG6467 Snowy Plover nesting site. This image illustrates why the Snowy Plover nests are so hard to see. Red arrow points to nest in middle of staked off area. This staked off area is intended to keep people that may not see the nest from stepping on it and destroying the eggs. The lens in this photo is an Astrophysics 155 with an 1100mm focal length. A 2X extender is used and gives a working focal length of 2200mm. This rather long optical system is working as a macro lens even though it is positioned about 18 to 20 feet from the nest. I normally don’t take this lens out on the beach. The two previous images were taken with this setup.
